Forty years ago, ‘Faith in the City’ challenged the Church and civic leaders to work together to confront poverty, inequality and racial injustice. In Liverpool, that challenge helped shape a distinctive partnership between faith and civic leadership, which continues to remain relevant today.
Looking to the Future
On Wednesday 29 June, 2026, Liverpool City Council approved a cross-party motion on the Manifesto for Hope. The motion was co-authored by Leader of the Council Liam Robinson and Cllr Jane Corbett.
The Manifesto for Hope sets out a shared vision for how faith communities and civic leaders can work together to build a fairer, more hopeful Liverpool. It brings together nine priorities, including tackling inequality, addressing racial injustice, supporting good work and building stronger communities.
The motion is an opportunity to build on Liverpool’s history of partnership and strengthen the work already taking place across the city. Faith communities are part of everyday life in Liverpool, running charities, supporting local communities, bringing people together and working for the common good.
The 40th anniversary is a chance to celebrate what Liverpool has achieved through partnership, and to look forward with hope to what we can achieve together next.
