Roles at the Diocese of Liverpool
This is a fixed term contract, initially offered for 3 years, but, dependent funding, may be extended further
Job Summary
Purpose of the role:
The aim of this focused role is to assist local church teams in every parish in the diocese of Liverpool to work towards best-practice financial management principles. To achieve this, your work will be split between parishes transitioning to become larger single parishes with others, and single parishes.
For those joining larger parishes, you will assist the finance teams to transition to working collaboratively within a single entity. You will provide calm direction and when needed energy, experience and clear thinking to help finance teams start and keep momentum on their change pathway.
For all parishes, you will be the primary diocesan lead on budgeting and will play a key role in the rollout of church accounting software (MyFundAccountingOnline [MFAO]), ensuring rigour and integration.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Supporting the transition to larger parishes
- Confidently facilitate the formation of local finance change teams (treasurers from individual churches) in each deanery, drawing people together and enabling their transition work to become a single entity.
- Meet with the team Lead of a particular finance team to clarify the several strands of work to be done and pathways to achieve them. Develop a good relationship and clear communication for the future. Where a team Lead doesn’t exist, lead that finance team ensuring collaborative local decision-making.
- Work closely with local teams, lay and clergy, always under the oversight of the relevant Navigation team (the team that oversees the change in each deanery). Offer hands on guidance and training as needed.
- Clarify the pathway these teams are on, give them confidence and encouragement on the journey. Be the technical expert on transitioning and the adoption of the new ways of working as a finance team.
- Check-in regularly with the Lead/teams to ensure progress and direction are all as expected; assist Lead with any remedial action or additional support/resources needed.
- Resolve issues where necessary, flagging any concerns.
- Train and equip the new PCC Treasurer to fulfil their role effectively.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Maintain effective records.
- Draw in your Resources team colleagues as necessary for their items of expertise.
2. Being the primary budgeting lead
- Define and refine existing budgeting processes for parishes integrated into MFAO and work to enhance the budget functionality within the software
- Develop training tools and resources for establishing and maturing the budget process, sensitive to the needs of parishes in different settings and with varied experience of budgeting.
- Lead on the budgeting process within the larger parish transition work detailed above.
- For single parishes, be the lead contact as they develop best-practice budgeting within the Mission Planning and Review (MPR) framework
3. Facilitating the take up and skilled use of our accounting software
- Mastery of MyFundAccounting.Online so as to assist in the delivery and development of training modules
- Initial set up of parishes to use MFAO, within a Larger Single Parish or a Single Parish
- Hands on guidance and support and trouble-shooting as needed
Other responsibilities will include:
- working across the Five Key Tasks (as below) with colleagues in the Resources team to nurture generous disciples, including resource creation, and the rollout of Generous Disciples conversations as part of the MPR process.
- keeping abreast of current financial and governance requirements and stewardship thinking within the Church of England and for ensuring ongoing advice and best practice is shared with parishes.
- working collaboratively with colleagues in the Resources team and across St James’ House to assist parishes to grow diverse and new income streams.
- playing an active part in the national network of Anglican giving advisors and implementing the strategy of the National Giving Team.
- Such other tasks as might be determined by the Director of Stewardship.
