Developing you as ministers for Christ is important for us as a diocese.

Continuing Ministerial Development encompasses any activity that better equips an individual to meet the demands and requirements for the exercise of their ministry. All officer holders under Common Tenure are expected to participate in activities that promote the continued development of their ministry and you:

  • should set aside regular time for study and for continued development in your ministry
  • are expected to participate in the equivalent of approximately five days of CPD activity each year and should undertake a spiritual retreat of up to five days each year. This should be on a pro rata basis for SSM Clergy. Clergy on Freehold cannot be required to take part but are strongly encouraged to participate
  • are expected to access appropriate CPD opportunities to promote your effectiveness in ministry and mission within and outside of the Diocese
  • will have access to an annual diocesan training grant. You may also request access to other resources when available.

MDR is intended to provide an opportunity for organised reflection on your ministry to help it become more effective. It involves you reflecting upon the past two years, obtaining feedback from colleagues and peers, and setting personal objectives for the coming year, including regarding sustaining and enhancing your wellbeing.

All officeholders under Common Tenure are required to participate in the process. If you have retained your Freehold, you are still encouraged to participate.

The two-yearly process will involve you meeting with a Bishop’s Reviewer and a written report will be produced, which will contain the new objectives or goals identified, as well as the identification of any personal and professional training, and support and development issues that need to be addressed. A particular focus of MDR is to support clergy wellbeing.

When your MDR falls due, Bishop’s Lodge will be in touch to let you know, at which point you will also be offered a date 6 to 8 months in the future for your post-MDR episcopal conversation. It will then be up to you to arrange your MDR and to let us have the paperwork back in good time.

Further information is available from bishopslodge@liverpool.anglican.org

During your curacy, you will not undertake an MDR, but you will be expected to complete all of the requirements for Assessment at the end of Curacy.

Retreats are part of Continuing Ministerial Education and are not counted as annual leave. The Diocese encourages all office holders to take an annual retreat. The annual entitlement for retreats is the inside of one week.
