Churches Count on Nature: Discover What’s on Your Doorstep

Posted on

7–15 June 2025

Churches Count on Nature returns this June – and your church is invited to take part in this exciting nationwide event celebrating the biodiversity in our churchyards.

Running from 7 to 15 June 2025, this annual initiative invites churches across all denominations in England and Wales including the Diocese of Liverpool to open their churchyards and burial grounds to the community to explore and record the plant and animal species they encounter. The event forms part of Love Your Burial Ground Week and is supported by A Rocha UK, Caring for God’s Acre, The Church of England, and The Church in Wales.

Why Take Part?

In the past four years, Churches Count on Nature has seen:

  • 1,625+ churchyard events
  • Over 30,000 people involved
  • More than 43,000 wildlife records submitted
  • 3,021 species recorded

These records, submitted to Caring for God’s Acre, help build a valuable picture of biodiversity across the country. The data can inform how churches manage their land, encouraging changes such as wildlife-friendly planting, reduced mowing, or the creation of wild areas – all contributing to environmental enrichment and stronger connections with the local community.

Who Can Get Involved?

Churches are encouraged to partner with local schools, wildlife groups, or community organisations, as well as to invite individuals who may not usually visit. Whether you’re an experienced naturalist or a complete beginner, Churches Count on Nature is a great opportunity to get outside, explore your churchyard, and appreciate the nature all around you.
