The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, is bringing his Lord’s Prayer Tour to Liverpool Cathedral for a special evening exploring the meaning and relevance of the Lord’s Prayer today.
The Lord’s Prayer has been spoken for centuries and is shared by Christians around the world. For some, its words are part of everyday life. Others may remember learning it at school or hearing it at a wedding, funeral or christening. Some may be encountering it for the first time.
Wherever you are starting from, you are warmly invited to join us.
What to expect
Through music, personal stories, teaching, conversation and shared reflection, the evening will consider how the Lord’s Prayer can shape not only the way we pray, but the way we live.
Archbishop Stephen will share his own reflections on the prayer and its continuing relevance to our lives, communities and world. Guests will also have the opportunity to ask questions, join the conversation and take part in moments of individual and shared reflection.
The evening will conclude by bringing everyone together to pray the Lord’s Prayer, with people invited to use the language and version most familiar to them.
This will be an informal and participatory evening, open to regular worshippers, those rediscovering faith and anyone simply curious about prayer and its place in life today.
Timings
Guests are invited to arrive at Liverpool Cathedral from 6.30pm. The main event will begin at 7pm and conclude at approximately 8.30pm.
The Cathedral’s regular Evening Prayer will take place at 5.30pm. Anyone attending the Lord’s Prayer Tour is welcome to join this service.
The Archbishop’s visit to Liverpool
The Cathedral gathering will conclude a day-long visit by Archbishop Stephen to the Diocese of Liverpool.
During the day, he will meet school students and people from across our diocesan communities, hearing how churches, schools and local communities are living out their faith and responding to the opportunities and challenges around them.
About the Lord’s Prayer Tour
During 2025 and 2026, Archbishop Stephen is visiting dioceses across the Northern Province of the Church of England to share the meaning and significance of the Lord’s Prayer.
The tour forms part of Faith in the North, a movement encouraging prayer, storytelling and the growth and renewal of Christian communities across the North of England.
Archbishop Stephen describes the Lord’s Prayer as both a prayer to learn by heart and a prayer that can get inside our hearts, shaping the way we live. Through the tour, he is inviting people to rediscover its words as a pattern for prayer, discipleship and positive change.
