Worship, Drama and Music Fill Liverpool Cathedral
Just this last week, Liverpool Cathedral welcomed more than 800 Year 6 pupils from Church of England schools across the Diocese of Liverpool for this year’s School Leavers Services. The children gathered to celebrate their time in primary school, reflect on all they have achieved, and prepare for the exciting transition to secondary school this September. Now in its fourth year, the event once again filled Britain’s largest cathedral with joy, laughter and worship.
This year both Bishop Ruth and Bishop Simon joined us for three of the services, and, judging by their dancing, they had just as much fun as the children. The service included a live stage performance exploring three accounts from the life of Jesus: the disciples caught in a storm, the miraculous catch of fish, and the healing of the paralysed man who was lowered through a roof. Through these stories, pupils were reminded that we all go through stormy times, but Jesus remains with us. God meets our needs, often in unexpected ways, and we all need people around us who will support and encourage us, just as we are called to be there for others.
Celebrations & Lessons from the Life of Jesus
For many Year 6 pupils, moving to high school can feel daunting. The message throughout the service reminded them that God will walk alongside them every step of the way as they begin this new chapter.
The service was action-packed with hardly a moment to breathe – the kids led the worship with enthusiastic singing and dancing (‘Sing wherever I go’ was a big hit with the children). A local community theatre company from Bootle, In Another Place, created a three-part drama that used the whole of the Cathedral and lead pastor, Tim Coates, from The Mount in St Helens, pieced the programme together, sharing encouraging and practical messages for pupils, teachers and parents.
School choirs from Garston Church of England Primary School, St John’s CE Primary School in Pemberton, St James’ CE Primary School in Haydock and St Margaret’s CE Primary School in Warrington helped create a worshipful atmosphere throughout the services. One particularly moving moment came as prayers written by every child were offered, creating a powerful reminder of the hopes, fears and excitement many pupils feel as they prepare to leave primary school behind.
The cheers from the children as school banners were processed through Liverpool Cathedral at the end of each service were a joy to behold. It was a fitting celebration of the vibrant Church school communities that form such an important part of the Diocese of Liverpool.
Bishop Simon Reflects on the Services
Bishop Simon of Warrington said:
“I was bowled over by the sheer joy of the School Leavers Services. These are always an important occasion, giving so many children the opportunity to pause and reflect on all they have experienced, learned and achieved during their primary school years. It is a chance to celebrate and give thanks for the support of teachers, family, and friends, and look forward to what lies ahead as pupils progress to secondary school. I pray that they carry with them courage as they begin this next chapter, and that they always know they are loved and held in God’s care. Wonderfully, it takes place in Liverpool’s great cathedral, a fitting setting to celebrate the splendid work of our schools.”
