We want every parish to be the best they can be for the recruitment and management of staff and volunteers.
Your parish may employ people to help you in your mission and ministry, including:
- administrators
- secretaries
- youth and children’s workers
- community workers
- caretakers and cleaners
You may also benefit from the loyal commitment of volunteers.
Recruiting people
When you have identified that you need to recruit someone, we recommend that you follow:
- the requirements of employment legislation including the Equality Act 2010 and the Employment Rights Act 1996.
- Our guidelines for safer recruitment
Managing volunteers
Most of the people in our churches – including PCC members – are volunteers. They give their time and talents generously to their parish community without payment.
Useful resources
We value our volunteers. They are the lifeblood of the church with many people offering tireless support to the local mission and ministry of their church. We want to make sure that anyone who volunteers is supported and managed to the highest possible standards.
Faithfully Volunteering
A good practice guide for faith communities and faith-inspired projects involved in volunteering, and for those who work with them. This will give plenty of help and support in managing volunteers.

Dealing with disputes
If you are in a situation where you think you are moving to a dispute with an employee (including job applicants and former employees) or there has been an accident, ALWAYS contact your insurer (or legal helpline) – even if you think it is unlikely to escalate, it is important to keep them informed.
