Transformative Action
Liverpool Diocese Racial Justice Strategy
Our strategy aims to change the culture in our Diocese, including our churches, worshipping communities and schools. We have committed to:
- Educate people to understand what racism is and how it has evolved both within society and in our specific culture
- Empower people of all ethnicities to become aware of the racist ideas we hold and work to move beyond them
- Evaluate our policies, procedures, behaviours and actions to identify and remove racist practices and support new policies that promote the equality for all.
It is important that we recognise that the work ahead of us is difficult. Dismantling of ways of thinking and being that have been part of our culture for years will not be changed overnight. We continue at the direction and in the power of Holy Spirit, it is in Christ Jesus that we must put our hope because,” What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Luke 18:27
What we have done:
- Committed to the work of racial justice through the appointment of a Racial Justice Officer, the creation of a racial justice strategy and the publication of our Diocese Racial Justice Statement.
- Commissioned a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion survey to find out which populations we need to support to join us in staff and clergy roles.
- Delivered racial justice training to school governors to support culture change within our school communities.
What we are doing:
- Supporting UKME/GMH staff and clergy through employee resource groups
- Working with parishes to explore the role of the Church of England in African enslavement and the legacy of slavery and racism in our shared life of faith.
- Supporting parishes to celebrate our diverse community through celebration events and sharing relevant resources.
What we will do:
- Review our HR and hiring practices and make changes to remove barriers to employment and promotion.
- In collaboration with the National Contested Heritage Committee, develop a framework to support churches to review and respond to their history.
- Deliver racial justice training to clergy and ordinands in the Diocese
