Emily’s Calling to Funeral Ministry

Posted on

For nearly five years, Emily has been part of the team at the Good Funeral Company, quietly supporting families at some of the most difficult moments in their lives. Emily began her career at Good Funeral Company in an administrative role but it has gradually expanded into something much more deeper, funeral ministry.

Emily first joined the organisation providing essential behind-the-scenes support, managing diaries, co-ordinating logistics, and often being the first point of contact for funeral directors. Through this work, she developed not only a detailed understanding of how funeral services are arranged, but also an appreciation for the care, sensitivity and compassion required in those initial conversations at such a sensitive yet important moment for families.

Over time, her role began to shift. What started as practical support developed into a more personal and pastoral calling. Today, alongside her ongoing responsibilities, Emily now works directly with families and leads funeral services as both a minister and celebrant.

Her commissioning as a Local Missional Leader marks an important moment in that journey.

“What began as a job has clearly become a vocation,” Emily reflects. “This step feels like a confirmation of the path I have been on over the past few years.”

At the heart of her work is a deep sense of privilege in supporting those who are grieving. To be invited into such significant and often painful moments is not something she takes lightly. Instead, it has strengthened her commitment to serve with integrity.

Emily speaks openly about the importance of her Christian belief in shaping how she approaches funeral ministry. The words of Jesus to Martha, “those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die” – remain central to what she shares with families, offering hope with both sensitivity and care.

Her journey has not been one she has taken alone. She is quick to acknowledge the support and encouragement of colleagues at the Good Funeral Company and within the Vocations Team at the Diocese of Liverpool who have helped guide and support her along the way. Their trust and belief in her have played a significant role in helping her grow into this new stage of leadership.

Looking ahead, Emily hopes her story will encourage others who may be exploring their own sense of calling.

“If you find yourself questioning what God might be calling you to, explore it,” she says. “Talk to those around you, seek guidance, and be open to where that calling could lead.”
