Diocesan Synod approves draft budget in the first meeting of the new synod

Diocesan Synod met on October 12 for their first meeting for the new Triennium and amongst a range of business approved the 2025 budget in outline. The meeting welcomed new and returning members with an explanation of the mechanisms and functions of synod.

Bishop John gave his Presidential Address which marked the new beginnings for this synod setting out the challenges that lie ahead. You can read his address here

Crucial to the business of this synod was an understanding of our bid to the Strategic Mission Ministry and Investment Board and the approval of the draft budget for 2025. In other business. elections were held in houses for a range of crucial committees including the Board of Finance Committee, Clergy Housing Committee, Diocesan Board of Education and its executive committee, Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches (DAC), Vacancy in See Committee, Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Committee (DMPC) and Audit Committee.

Synod heard a range of updates including details on General Synod from Archdeacon Miranda. Miranda referred to General Synod sessions, papers and debates. And you can read more here 

Members were updated about the Wigan Deanery Motion which has gone through synod. You can find those details here  alongside the Secretary General’s paper.  Details of our General Synod representatives are published on our Diocesan website and can be found here

Archdeacon Pete referred to the work of both the Diocesan Safeguarding Team (DST) and that of the National Safeguarding Team (NST)  here (DST).   More information on the work of the National Safeguarding Team can be found here on the Church of England’s website.

There were a few questions via Standing Orders and a debate on cathedral representation on synod.
