10 Net Zero Christmas Tips for Churches

Posted on

As we continue to prepare our churches for Christmas its important to remember how we can remain sustainable whilst sharing the Christmas message with our congregations.

We’ve put together a simple list for you to follow to help you on your Net Zero journey throughout the Christmas period.

  1. Switch to LED Christmas Lights
LED lights use up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last much longer, reducing both emissions and waste.
  2. Use Timers for Lighting Displays
Set timers so lights are only on during services or community events, avoiding unnecessary energy use overnight.
  3. Encourage Low-Carbon Travel for Services
Promote walking, cycling, car-sharing, or public transport for Christmas services and events. Include this in notices and social media.
  4. Decorate Sustainably
Use natural, reusable, or recycled decorations (e.g., pinecones, greenery from gardens) instead of plastic or single-use items.
  5. Serve Local and Plant-Based Food
If hosting Christmas meals or events, source food locally and offer plant-based options to reduce emissions from transport and livestock.
  6. Reduce Heating Waste
Heat only the spaces being used and lower thermostats slightly during gatherings. Encourage warm clothing for carol services in cooler spaces.
  7. Digital or Recycled Christmas Cards
Suggest members send e-cards or cards made from recycled materials to cut down on paper waste and carbon footprint.
  8. Eco-Friendly Gifts for Outreach
If giving gifts to the community, choose practical, sustainable items (e.g., reusable bottles, fair-trade goods) rather than plastic-heavy products.
  9. Offset Christmas Energy Use
Calculate extra energy used during the festive season and offset through a reputable carbon offset scheme or tree planting initiative.
  10. Share the Net Zero Message
Use Christmas services and newsletters to remind the congregation about the church’s net zero goals and encourage small actions at home.
