A year ago a terrible tragedy hit Southport when amidst the fun of a summer’s event, three little girls died and others were injured, traumatised and scarred.
Today we remember the smiles of Bebe, Elsie and Alice and the joy that they had in dance. We recognise the pain their families and friends have suffered and the loss of all that might have been.
In the shock that ensued, speculation fuelled fear and we saw riots erupt both locally and across the country. Our humanity and love of neighbour was threatened.
Today, in honour of the innocence of our children and aware of the loss of all their potential, we commit ourselves to living lives with purpose and care, compassion and love. And we pray that we might all come to appreciate more fully the life we have been given.
Father God, we pray for all those who are mourning the loss of Elsie, Alice and Bebe every day. Hold them in your embrace. Walk beside them in your compassion.
May those who are continuing to recover from their injuries find your strength and healing. Give them courage to face the future and faith in the goodness of others.
And we ask that you might renew hope in each of us as we seek to be people who love our neighbour as ourselves. May we know your peace which drives out fear. And help us to reclaim the wonder, curiosity, potential and joy that children teach us. Amen.
