On the 5th July, the team at St Michael’s Church, Garston took on the challenge at the Liverpool Cathedral to raise money for a new heating system for their church. The church has been trying to raise funding for a new heating system for some time, but raising the exact amount required has been difficult due to various issues, from socioeconomic to overall costing.
Without sufficient heating systems in function at St Michael’s Church for the past 2 years, the church has struggled. They had tried to apply for grants, but still struggled to make it work to get a new heating system. Now, the team at St Michael’s are trying something new. A group of 5 took on the challenge to abseil down the side of the Liverpool Cathedral. Aly Tunstall, vicar at St Michael’s, Phil Hayden, church secretary, Diane Singleton, PCC member, Khaela Dirken and Amanda Kilroy, members of the congregation. Two of this amazing group of five admitted they’re scared of heights, Ally being one of them!
At St Michael’s Church, they’ve got a healthy age range in their congregation from young children to people in their 80s. Ally wants all members of the congregation to be able to come and worship in the warmth and not be deterred by the cold. Ally wants the church to be able to open up to the community and host various events like men’s clubs, dementia cafes and more. But to be able to post these for the local community, the church will need to have functional heating in place.
The team at St Michael’s Church was determined to take on the abseil to raise some necessary funding, and Ally decided, as the vicar, she couldn’t expect others to do it whilst she didn’t, so fuelled by her commitment to her church, Ally signed up. Ally said she was “doing it for a good cause” and her “driving point was the church staying open”. So far, the church has raised a nice amount and they are extremely grateful to the congregation, local community and even a local school who’ve donated to such a local cause. They are one step closer to unlocking a new heating system for their church. There’s still some time to donate for a great cause, though, and you can by clicking here.
