In August 2024, the Church Commissioners launched a new funding programme to support cathedrals working towards Net Zero Carbon. As part of this, a special stream of ‘Demonstrator’ grants was made available for projects that not only cut carbon emissions but also offer valuable learning for others.
Following three years of careful planning and research by teams across Liverpool Cathedral, they submitted a bid to help fund an air source heat pump to power the underfloor heating in the Well. This system was installed in 2019–2020 and was designed to be compatible with low-carbon technology, allowing them to take the next step on their net zero journey.
Once installed, the new heat pump will reduce our carbon emissions by 7.84 tonnes of CO₂ every year.
As part of their role in the Demonstrator programme, they’ll be sharing regular updates , from energy savings and practical insights into the installation process, to how this work contributes to the Cathedral’s wider Net Zero journey.
They’re looking forward to exploring how they can all play a part in building a more sustainable future.
