St Peter’s Church is praying for a new vicar who will join us in bringing the gospel of God’s love and redemption to the people of Parr, situated in the deanery of St Helens in the diocese of Liverpool.  St Helens lies mid-way between Liverpool and Manchester and is surrounded by two major roads – the A58 and the A580, along with the motorways M6, M62 and M57, giving good links to two international airports, several universities and teaching hospitals.

We are an evangelical church with an outreach ministry to people of all ages and stages in our low-income community.  Our regular activities include a toddler group, coffee mornings, free hot refreshments, and we have good links with local schools and care homes.

Our beautifully re-ordered church building is a focal point for local heritage interest, as well as a flexible space.  Our worship is structured without being overly informal – we do, however, robe for communion and pastoral services.

We are looking for a vicar who will:

  • Work alongside us, to develop and direct the gifts of the whole congregation, and deepen our Christian discipleship;
  • Be a catalyst for our mission to the community, interested in people of all-ages, and able to nurture growth in our church.
  • Offer pastoral ministry within the church family

We can offer you:

  • A small team of dedicated church members who all play our part in the mission and ministry of our church;
  • An ethos motivated by the compassion and love of Jesus where all are welcome, and where we go the extra mile to serve the needs of our community.

This post is offered under Common Tenure EITHER as a House-for-Duty post with a four-bedroom vicarage provided, OR as a part-time 0.4 stipendiary post without housing provided at a stipend of £15,836, depending on the needs of the person appointed.

We are a church which has been transformed by the Leading Your Church into Growth programme and we would wish to continue to build our church on its inspirational and motivational principles: welcoming young and old, encouraging a love of Bible reading and flexibly planning ahead under God’s guidance through widening our vision for his people in this place.
We are looking for a passionate and energetic vicar who will recognise gifts in others and encourage them to use them for God’s purposes and lead teams of volunteers to reach out to all ages and grow St Michael’s in the community.   We want a vicar who will lead us to a deeper love of God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
We are offering you a warm, welcoming and growing congregation who will support you both in prayer and practical aspects. We have a highly experienced PCC and team of Lay Readers, Church Wardens, Pastoral Assistant and Parish Administrator. We are looking for a priest who has the energy, vision and courage to help us grow our Church by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in ways that are attractive to the communities we serve. Both our Churches have engaged with ‘Leading your Church into Growth’ (LYCiG) and have woven their mission prayer into our liturgy and our prayer life. This engagement has underpinned our outreach work and informed our thinking as we work to grow our Churches.

Holy Trinity was built in 1890 and re-ordered in 2015 when pews were replaced by flexible seating, a new foyer was added with a range of facilities and a mezzanine floor was created at the west end of the nave. Our approach is broadly Liberal Evangelical. We often follow the lectionary but regularly enjoy embarking on a sermon series to encourage spiritual growth in a particular area and to give a freshness to our teaching and preaching. We value our relationship with Trinity St Peter’s CE school very highly.

St Michael and All Angels is an attractive grade 2* listed building and the only public building in the parish. Over the years we have held several artists’ days, retreats, open days and guided tours and is the meeting place for Great Altcar Parish Council. We have an extensive church garden and graveyard. We leave areas of the grounds unmown to encourage wildlife and we have placed several bird and bat boxes in the surrounding trees. We are a silver Eco church. A number of special services are held which are part of rural tradition at Rogationtide and Harvest, for example

Our united benefice has a gifted ministry team which includes an associate self supporting priest, 3 retired clergy, 5 lay readers and 3 informal worship leaders and preachers. In addition we have 2 organists/directors of music and a worship group at Holy Trinity and a robed choir at St Michael’s.

The vicarage is a short distance from the Church in the heart of Formby. It is a well- maintained, spacious and modern 4 -bedroom house with lovely gardens to front and rear.

Formby is a small town of about 25,000 and there are 2 other Anglican churches. Holy Trinity church itself lies in the commercial and shopping heart known as the ‘Village’ . The village provides a central and bustling location for everyday shopping opportunities with chains like Boots, Iceland, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer Simply Food outlets but also smaller family run businesses. It has a modern swimming pool and fitness centre. Altcar is comprised of Great Altcar, a farming community, which is also home to ‘Farmer Ted’s’ and Little Altcar where most of the 3000 parishioners live. It is seen considerable growth with the the building of a new estate, Pinewood Park.

Transport links whether by bus or train are good to Liverpool and Southport and further afield to Manchester. If you’re up for a bit of a drive, within two hours you can reach the scenic coasts of North Wales, or head inland to the breathtaking landscapes of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and Peak District. Locally, you can discover the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust Centre at Martin Mere, the historic Rufford Old Hall (National Trust), and the relaxing Formby Hall Golf Club. Formby Little Theatre and the Atkinson Arts Centre in Southport offer a lively mix of visual and performing arts. In Liverpool, You’ll have easy access to top venues like the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool Empire, Philharmonic Hall, and the Liverpool Arena. Art lovers will enjoy the rich variety of galleries including Tate Liverpool, the Walker Art Gallery, and Bluecoat.

We are praying for the right person to step into this role and join us in sharing the hope and love of Jesus with the world. Could that be you?

Liverpool diocese shares the Church of England’s ambition to grow a church that is younger and more diverse.  After a recent first release of investment now enables Liverpool diocese to form a new team focused on developing and implementing a new and comprehensive 0-18+ discipleship and vocations strategy that will be ambitious yet achievable.  It is a very exciting opportunity.  From a low base, our objective is to see significant growth in the number of children and young people encountering Jesus, becoming embedded in a discipleship journey in church communities, and going on to explore their vocation, including ministry leadership in some capacity.

The Diocesan Children’s and Family role will lead the children’s and family strategy (ages 0-11) as part of an integrated 0-18+ strategy for the diocese.   This is an exciting opportunity, to be part of forming and shaping a new team of Youth and Children’s Hubs in deaneries, and starting from a very low base, to establish new and innovative ministries and worshipping communities that will reach and encourage children and families who have no connection with faith and church, as well as those that do.   The role will build on previous work that has been established, revive work streams where appropriate from successful legacy work in children’s ministry, and the strategy will grow and evolve as we gain more experience of working across the diocese in a new way.

The role will develop the strategy in collaboration with the 0-18+ Strategy Lead and team, the diocesan Education Department and with the church and lay ministry leaders in each LSP/deanery.  The strategy will be developed around the interaction of School, Church and Home and will include outreach to children and their parents/carers, linking closely with the Schools Worshipping Community Coordinator.  It will be informed by insights from research from within Liverpool and National Church initiatives such as ‘Growing Faith’.

This role sits within a new team of specialist diocesan leads in the following areas:

  • Diocesan Youth Lead
  • Diocesan Lead for Schools Based Worship Communities
  • Diocesan Project Administrator

As part of this team, this role is responsible for producing and sign-posting support and resources, convening learning across the diocese and leading learning reviews; working closely with colleagues in the learning & development team to help shape a relevant lay and ordained learning curriculum; acting as an advocate in relation to developing vocations in others; mentoring and supporting volunteers; and operating to the highest professional standards in children and youth work.

Position in organisation/accountable to

This position sits within the 0-18+ Team and reports to the 0-18+ Strategy Lead.

 Duties and key responsibilities

  • Develop and lead the Children & Families’ Strategy (ages 0-11) as part of the integrated 0-18+ children and young people’s discipleship and vocation strategy.  This will be in collaboration with the 0-18+ Strategy Lead (your team leader) and team, within each deanery, liaising with the Education Team and with lay and ordained ministry leadership
  • Produce and signpost support and resources for Hub Leads based in deaneries and use in the diocese.  This will include:
      •  Developing resources and identifying support for the Hub Leads to implement deanery Children & Families strategies
      • Convening and running a thriving Children and Families’ Strategy Learning Community with the Hub teams and other paid and voluntary leaders and teams.
      • Liaising and facilitating support from other diocesan teams e.g. asset development team looking at use of church buildings
      • Leading strategy learning reviews with churches, ministries and hubs.
    •  Act as an advocate for Children & Families’ strategy within the diocese.  This includes a strong working relationship with the diocesan Education Department, and input and support to the ‘Lifecall’ vocations work including speaking with people interested in pursuing children and families’ ministry.
    • Work closely with colleagues within the 0-18+ team, the Education Department, and across the diocese, to identify opportunities and synergies to strengthen Children & Families work.  This will include regular liaison with Hub Leads, clergy and lay ministry leadership in deaneries – especially Rectors in Larger Single Parishes and the leadership of resource churches, as well as colleagues in the Education Department and in other diocesan teams such as social and racial justice teams.  It will also include liaising with leads in other church denominations in the diocese, and non-church-based children’s work.

 Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Liverpool Diocese is committed to treating our whole community with dignity and respect. We desire to represent diverse identities within our community whether this be by race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability or social background of each person to ensure they fulfil their potential within a proactive, loving and caring environment.

About the Diocese of Liverpool

The Diocese of Liverpool is the Church of England in a corner of the North West with churches from Southport to Widnes; Wigan to Warrington and throughout the city of Liverpool all working their hardest to fulfil our vision of asking God for a bigger church making a bigger difference with more people knowing Jesus and more justice in the world.

As we work towards that vision we have four priorities:

  1. Introducing people to Jesus
  2. Deepening discipleship
  3. Developing Christian leaders
  4. Working for justice

About Fit for Mission

The Diocese of Liverpool is on a transformation journey called Fit for Mission, a six-year strategic programme to support our vision of asking God for a bigger church to make a bigger difference. The goal of Fit for Mission is to enable all parishes, church plants, fresh expressions, schools and chaplaincies to fulfil God’s mission and to make new disciples where they are.

The Fit for Mission programme will provide focus and support to work together to face the significant issues that hold back mission and growth.

Fit for Mission will support each deanery in the Diocese of Liverpool to create their own future. There are six elements to this, and for each of them the programme will make available help and specialist resource.

  1. A focus on developing our discipleship culture through training and support, including delivering ‘Cultivate’, a successful Local Missional Leadership programme. Resulting in hundreds of newly planted worship communities and justice initiatives.
  2. Creating core support-services in deaneries to support and resource your mission
  3. Creating missional leadership teams of lay and ordained people over larger areas with responsibility for specific mission and worship communities.
  4. Developing agreed mutual support and accountability structures for all leaders.
  5. Work towards each deanery having one Larger Parish. Fewer parishes, but more worshipping communities and more justice initiatives. Less bureaucracy, more mission. With a local strategic approach, more diversity of worship will be possible.
  6. Making sure buildings are fit for purpose, with buildings expertise available to assist in making good decisions on use, investment, or closure.

Earth Justice is an identified priority, being high on the priorities of young people, as well as a mandate set out by national synod. The Diocese of Liverpool has a strategy that sets out how we propose to meet our carbon net zero targets by 2030. This reinforces our objective to be a sustainable flourishing church equipped for the future.

We’re delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced person as our church’s Youth and Children’s Worker.

Here at St Peter’s our vision is for each person to experience whole life discipleship. This is an exciting and fulfilling opportunity to further our offer to the young people of St. Peters, beyond childhood, into their teenage years and beyond in developing their path with God.

We are looking for someone with a passion for working with and nurturing young people, excellent communication skills and a good record in leadership.

Our first efforts to find a suitable candidate earlier this year were unsuccessful, so perhaps if you hesitated before, you should be encouraged to apply this time around!
