Vicky Sime is a Lay Reader at the United Benefice of Holy Trinity, Formby, and St Michael and All Saints, Altcar. Her journey in ministry began twelve years ago when she started training in 2013, receiving her licensing by Bishop Paul Bayes on 20th September 2015.
Vicky’s path to ministry wasn’t typical. Before embarking on her Reader training, she spent nine years as a forensic photographer at the Forensic Explosive Laboratory in Kent. In 2001, she moved to the North West with her husband, who began working for the Health & Safety Executive as an explosives expert.
After returning to church and spending a few years reconnecting with her faith, Vicky felt a clear calling to preach and teach. Encouraged by a fellow Reader, she embarked on Reader training to deepen her understanding of the Bible, liturgy, and the rhythms of church life. “It was undeniably hard work but also very rewarding,” she reflects. She found the academic side challenging, but with support – including her husband proofreading her work, she completed the course successfully. The experience not only strengthened her knowledge but also helped her grow in confidence and skill, showing the transformative power of well-supported ministry training.
Vicky particularly valued the relationships she built along the way. “One of the things I really enjoyed was working with and getting to know likeminded people who wanted to serve their church in this ministry. I met some brilliant people with deep faith and kind hearts.”
In 2014, Vicky completed her placement at Christ Church, Aughton, and found the experience deeply rewarding. When a vacancy for Ministry Centre Coordinator arose in 2016, she applied and was successfully appointed, serving in the role until 2022. Her work there, along with her involvement in her local churches, gave her valuable opportunities to put her training into practice in meaningful and impactful ways.
Vicky’s story demonstrates how a calling to ministry can intersect with any background or career path. With commitment, guidance, and support, anyone who feels called can find a role in the Church, grow in their faith, and make a real difference in their community.
